Giving notice guide

Once you have received confirmation of your booking, you can then arrange to give your notice. We will provide details of how to book this appointment.

  • It costs £46.50 per person to give a notice of marriage or civil partnership.
  • If you are an East Riding resident (excluding Hull) and pay your council tax to the East Riding, and have been for at least 8 days, you can give notice with us.
  • If you are not an East Riding resident, you must give notice to your own local register office, in the region you pay council tax. This means - if you live in Hull and pay your council tax to Hull City Council, we can't take your notice.
  • If you are not a British or Irish National, or have a divorce document from a foreign country, the fee may be higher, so please contact us so we can advise you according to your personal situation.

Please note: You can not marry, or enter a Civil Partnership if you haven’t given notice at least 30 days before your ceremony

You can check where you pay council tax using your postcode on the council finder.

Having a ceremony abroad?

You may be asked to obtain a certificate of no impediment (CNI) if you having a legal ceremony aboard. There are several things to consider:

  • Only British nationals living in the East Riding of Yorkshire (Excluding Hull) can obtain a certificate of no impediment from the East Riding of Yorkshire Registration Service
  • Check that you need a certificate of no impediment at all – Information on this can be found on Gov.uk.
  • We would always advise taking advice from the country of ceremony local authorities on doing this. You need to know the wording for the location of the ceremony which we be added to the document. We can’t provide this for you.
  • Make sure your certificate is in date for your ceremony. Your certificate will be dated 29 days after the date you give your notice. If you do this to early the document may be out of date before your ceremony. Do this too late and you may not have the document in time to travel. Some countries insist the document be no older than 3 months. Please check with the local authorities in the country of your ceremony.
  • You may be asked to get the document Apostille (Legalised) by your country of ceremony. Information on this can be found on Gov.uk.

If you need a certificate of no impediment, and the time is right to give notice, then you can book an appointment below. Please ensure you live and pay your council tax to East Riding of Yorkshire Council and not Hull City Council. We can only assist you if you are an East Riding of Yorkshire resident.

Want a passport in your new name?

If you are getting married or forming a civil partnership and you are travelling abroad immediately after the ceremony, you can renew a British passport in your new name up to three months before the ceremony.

HM Passport Office will cancel your old passport, and postdate your new passport in your new name, making it valid from the date of your ceremony. This means you can't use it until the ceremony has taken place. You need to fill out a PD2 form.

Contact us at ceremonies@eastriding.gov.uk for further information.

There is a £47 fee for this service.
