Naming

Welcome a new child into the family and share the special moment with family and friends

A truly memorable family experience

A naming ceremony is a way of welcoming a child, or children, into your family. It is an alternative to a religious celebration. You can create your own unique event that you, your family, and all your guests will remember. During the ceremony you will state your commitment to care for and love the child, or children, as their parent and guardian.

Who can have a ceremony

A naming ceremony is not just for babies, children of any age can have a naming ceremony and any number of children can take part. The parent, a person with parental responsibility or the legal guardian of a child or children can organise a ceremony. While you may wish to include your older children in the ceremony.

Choosing a venue

You can hold your naming ceremony at licensed venue, such as a hotel, barn or stately home, a registration office or a private venue. If you choose a private venue remember to make sure your chosen venue can accommodate the number of people you want to invite and is in the East Riding.

Holding a celebratory ceremony in a private venue

You can hold a ceremony at a private unregistered venue.

Please note: there is a non-refundable fee of £250 for a necessary assessment of the private venue. This must be paid at the time of booking.

The fee for the legal ceremony is dependent on the day of the week:

  • Mon-Thurs: £280
  • Friday: £300
  • Saturday: £395
  • Sunday: £420 -Bank holiday: £420

If you prefer to have a ceremony outside of office hours, there will be an additional charge of £120.

Personalisation

You can personalise your naming ceremony by choosing what’s to be included, such as personalised promises, reading of any poems and integrating your favourite songs.

The ceremony delivered by our ceremonies officers can have input from up to 6 different family members or friends (known as supporting adults). Our trained staff will work closely with you to discuss the options that are available to you.

Certificates

A commemorative certificate is signed during the ceremony for you to take home and remember this special day. You can also purchase additional certificates, which can contain elements of the ceremony such as the supporting adults' promises and the grandparents' promises.
